Subject: [ferrethealth] insulinoma ferret/keeps seizing at vet--sorry long
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Our 7.5 yo ferret has had insulinoma since he was 3. Had 3 surgeries. Has now been on pred for 1+ years. We don't monitor blood sugar number at home but go on clinical symptoms. Up to this point I'm sure his sugar # is low, but eats well, some lethargy, no seizures.

Yesterday after a completely normal day of eating meals/pred, his sugar dropped just before he was due for 2nd pred dose of the day. He responded somewhat to Karo syrup, but after an hour he still wasn't alert enough to eat/take his medicine so we took him to ER vet. On way out the door he started seizing and that lasted about 1 minute.

WHen got to vet sugar read 86. I was giving Karo on way there. Vet was monitoring sugar level and giving boluses of 25% dextrose as needed. Ferret was alert enough to eat and take regular pred dose at midnight.

However, vet called at 6 am to say that ferret had two more seizures overnight after eating and getting pred, and that sugar levels were in the normal range when this happened. Seizure lasted slightly longer these two times, and vet gave valium.

At first I thought the hospitals blood sugar meter might be off, but I don't think it would be off by such a tremendous amount.

My question is: can the seizures continue after a blood sugar drop even after levels have returned to normal? I haven't had this happen before.

My ferret takes pred syrup that is 5mg prednisolone/15mL fluid. He takes .4ccs twice per day. At ER he is now on constant drip on 2.5% dextrose.

Any advice apreciated. Thanks in advance.

[Moderator's Note: the pred concentration has been verified as a typo. It should have read 15 mg/5 mL]
