Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] ferret 'screaming', violently shaking head and 'sneezing'
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

We have a ferret that, for some unknown reason, does
the same thing. We have had three vets look at him,
including a highly-respected ferret vet. None could
offer anything definitive as to the cause. It could be
a deviated septum, allergies, or something else. They
don't know. This ferret has been doing this for
several years.
What one vet finally recommended was a tiny dose of
Benedryl Children's Allergy medicine. At first she
recommended .2cc, but said if he got too sleepy, to
cut the dose.
Well, he got too sleepy. but the symptoms reduced
dramatically. HOWEVER, he began sleeping through his
regular feeding times, so we cut the dose in half
(.1cc) and he seems to be doing better.
We wake him up to eat, and have begun hand-feeding him
to keep him motivated to eat.
While we don't really like the idea of giving him this
stuff very much, it has made a substantial difference.
I know how absolutely awful that coughing/screaming
sounds. We have not heard that type of outburst since
we went to the Benadryl. (Occasional sneezing, but not
the awful convulsions.) Check with your vet to be
sure.
