Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Deslorelin vs Lupron
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

First I should say that it is not completely accurate that the melatonin and lupron I am using are not effective...it is more accurate to say that don't work as well as they used to. Edgar 's tail is about 50% bald now, and is thinning eveywhere else. The sexual aggression has decreased substantially...he only mounts my female every once in awhile ( 2-3 times a month), but is still obsessed with licking her vulva. Edgar has been on the melatonin implant for one year now. He was on 250 mcg dose (1 mon depot) of lupron originally but about 4 months ago I increased to the 500 mcg 1 mon depot. He is also on 0.1 mg propecia SID, and has been for over a year (had prostate issues about 2 years ago). Maybe I just need to give it more time...I know it takes 2-4 wks after initiation of treatment in humans to see a decrease in hormone levels.

The more reading I have done, the more I agree that deslorelin would not work in a case where Lupron doesn't. The two drugs are almost identitical nonapeptide analogues of GnRH. There is just one amino acid difference between them is a leucine vs a tryptophan in the 6th position.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to grad school for chemistry (drug design) so I love learning about this stuff.
