Subject: [ferrethealth] Fluids
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Lots of water and pedialyte is not making any difference in the
'rehydration' of Bandit. Our goal is to get him hydrated enough to do a
biopsy or surgery. If I gave him SQ fluids myself will this be helpful??

Bandit dropped from 2.15 to 1.5 lbs in a week, developed a very large mass
in the area his spleen is at. We are not sure if it is just an enlarged
spleen or some type of lymphoma as he is too weak to undergo surgery of
any type, the vets said.

He lost weight suddenly, dragging his hind end around, but getting around,
going potty where he was supposed to, eating, and drinking; we took him to
the vet. Then he just didn't walk at all unless supported, not eating as
much, not drinking as much. The bump then became apparently suddenly. He
still manages to use what little energy he has to crawl away to potty. He
lives in the house now, not his cage.

When he is lifted to walk, he curls the toes. First just the back toes,
now he is curling the front toes and doesn't try to walk. He has
willingness to eat, but not to chew. He will rarely try to chew it - when
he does he seems to get nowhere with it.

I am at my wits end. I want to do the surgery but can't get him hydrated.
I have heard that if they are very dehydrated SQ won't work. I don't want
to put him through SQ if it still won't allow him to go under the knife.

Thank you for your support.
