Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: sweets/ ferret diseases

Well, there is chocolate and then there is chocolate. It may also be that there are ferrets and then there are ferrets on this question. Ours haven't had chocolate, but I do know of people who have had ferrets steal some milk chocolate without ill effects. Still, there might be some individuals who are more sensitive. Also, the type of chocolate matters for the content which can affect dog's hearts badly. That is why bittersweet is more dangerous for dogs than milk chocolate and good cooking chocolate (also used in some premium cocoas) in more dangerous yet. Ironically, for humans the more bitter chocolates actually have other compounds which are very healthy for humans.

Anyway, the point is that "poisonous" can't be used as a blanket statement with ferrets and chocolates, but it sure is a lot safer to not risk encountering a situation where the individual's own vulnerability or the chocolate's contents make it one of the times when it could be applicable.
