Hi, Vivian, and everyone else,

You are absolutely right to be leery of this. In fact
I'd run, not walk, in the other direction and find a
different vet. Having seen first hand twice what it
means when a ferret is bilateral and you don't get the
electrolytes in balance quickly I would never, ever
subject a ferret to that if it isn't 100% necessary.

Our original vet (now retired) practiced for 35 years
and pioneered right adrenal surgeries (with vena cava
ligation). He never would make a ferret Addisonian
(remove a second gland) unless it was absolutely
necessary. The risks to the ferret are simply too
great to do this. In addition, ferrets with no
adrenal glands are less able to cope with stress.
Besides, I've had several ferrets have one adrenal
gland out and never, ever have a problem again for the
rest of their lives, as in for four years or more.

Lupron is not the answer for an otherwise healthy and
relatively young ferret. In the long run it is far
more expensive than surgery and it doesn't cure the
disease. Surgery does. In your place I would find
another vet and get a second opinion, even if I had to
travel to get my ferret what I consider proper care.

The usual disclaimer applies: I am not a vet, just a
ferret owner who's had too much experience with
adrenal disease.

All the best,
Caity and the fantastic four
