Subject: [ferrethealth] aspirated barium
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

My ferret has suffered a spiffy insult to his lungs -- he has lost about 45%
lung capacity to barium. One lobe is full with diffuse pattern throughout the
rest, happened Dec 6. He was to get a barium series to his *GI* tract due to
chronic diarrhea, but that obviously went a bit awry. In any case, what's
done is done, and now my questions are:
1. How long must I wait to do bloodwork to get an accurate reading -- don't
want any lung insult to continue to interfere with what might be going on in
his intestines as far as blood results go.
2. How long should I wait before attempting a surgical procedure?
3. Does the barium crystallize in his lungs or does it remain a liquid that
coats the lungs or does the body start walling it off thereby keeping it in
place?
4. There is some question as to whether aspirated barium will cause cancer
in the future -- any studies on this? I suppose most animals aspirate when
vomiting it back up rather than getting directly into the lungs. I've only seen
one other case as bad as this and the dog died. Somebody I know said they
knew of a cat that got it directly into the lungs and lived, but they didn't
know how it did in the long run.
He finally got the energy yesterday to go exploring around the house for a
little while and did so again today, but he will not eat on his own since this
happened. I've mixed his regular food 3 parts with 1 part AD into a gruel and
he will eat that if I put it to his face; only had to syringe him this past
Wed and Thurs at which time he got 12cc that way and then would continue to eat
a bit more from the spoon. Otherwise he will not eat of his own accord. I
just find that a bit odd.
Anyway, if those questions can be addressed in a definite manner, or as
definite as can be, that would be appreciated as he is still dealing with his
diarrhea and I'm sure he would be more comfortable without it. (He did have ECE as
a kit, no other medical problems)
