Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Vaccine reaction
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

In the UK, vets primarily use the multivalent canine vaccines such as Nobivac DHPPi and Eurican DHPPi to vaccinate ferrets against distemper.

Over the past 3 years we have been asking ferret owners to record all adverse events they observe in their ferrets in the one month period following vaccination. We also asked the owners of ferrets who never been vaccinated to record all adverse events occurring over a random one month period. 235 completed questionnaires have been returned for vaccinated
ferrets, the majority of which received multivalent canine vaccines. 113 questionnaires have been returned for control (non-vaccinated ) ferrets.

3 ferrets (2.7%) in the control non-vaccinated group experienced serious adverse events, and 6 ferrets (2.6%) in the vaccinated group experienced serious adverse events.

"Lethargy" was reported for a significantly greater number of vaccinated ferrets compared with non-vaccinated ferrets. Such symptoms are a typical response to stimulation of the immune system by vaccines, and we would have been surprised not to have observed symptoms of this nature in some ferrets.
Full statistical analysis of the data is currently in progress.

> Hi,This is for the vets and others out there who will know about this or have experience. I´ve recently vaccinated a ferret with Fervac D who subsequently had a reaction to it, not life threatening but bad enough. The ferret hasn´t had its full course of vaccinations yet, and I don´t want to use Fervac D again. We can´t get Purevax here in Denmark, and I don´t think I´ll be able to get a dispensation for it. They don´t seem to allow its use in Europe, because it´s a gene-modified product (this was the reason the company gave). The owner wants to exhibit the ferret and plans to breed, therefore it needs to be vaccinated. What can I do? Is it enough to pretreat with antihistamines before vaccinating eith Fervac D. Will it help to pretreat with steroid (anti-inflammatory dose). Will steroids hamper the immune response , even if given in anti-inflammatory vs immunosuppressive doses? I´ve taken a blood sample 3 weeks after the Fervac D, 3 weeks prior to Fervac D the ferret was vaccinated with Canifen SHP( I think it´s called this), a dog vaccine. There were no antibodies. Why? Surely there should have been antibodies. I want to avoid Fervac D in this ferret as a second and more severe reaction is likely, but I don´t think I´ll be allowed to use Purevax. What can I do?
