With ferrets there would be worry about ingestion perhaps. At
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/natural/patient-teatreeoil.html
>From NIH and the U.S. National Library of Medicine there are some strict cautions against ingesting tea tree oil. (It may be figured that ingestion is unlikely in this ear swab use.)
Some other pharmacognosy resources (in general, rather than veterinary):
http://www.umm.edu/altmed/index.html
http://www.pfaf.org/database/
http://www.herbalgram.org/
Here is a location which includes references to specific veterinary toxicology studies involving tea tree oil, The busy background makes it hard to me to see clearly enough to skim, though, so I will trust you to go there for the resources:
http://www.exoticbird.com/gillian/teatree.html
A veterinary task force report:
http://www.vet-task-force.com/Abstract-tea-tree-oil.htm
Is it safe for ferrets when used as directed for this product? I have no idea. It might be something to ask the animal poison control people about, or it might be that the method of use and amounts would make ingestion highly unlikely.
Have you considered asking Performance Foods for data? I have found them to be very open about sharing hard information that they have used. Performance Food and Pretty Pets (the makes of Natural Gold) have been the most forthcoming companies I have found about sharing actual studies used in product development and the data from those.
