Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: questions on low potassium levels
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Dr. Sue Liszewski, DVM gave me permission to carry this to the FHL:

BEGIN QUOTE

Chronic renal disease will cause low potassium and high phosphorus, but acute renal disease causes high potassium. This is true in most animals. Low postassium is very common in cats with chronic kidney disease.

Also Diabetic Ketoacidosis can cause low potassium and low Phosphorous.

We will use insulin in cases where the postasium level is really high and we need assistance to get it down. I think the potassium getting low from the isulin by itself in animals is much less likely. The amount of insulin to do this iver time would be higher I think. I haven't really come across low potassium levels in insulinomic patients. I don't want to say it can't and doesn't happen just personal experience.

Hope that helps.

Dr. Sue
