Subject: [ferrethealth] -caine drugs ok for fert? and glaucoma/pain ??
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Some of you may remember my questions this summer about Cookie's glaucoma. It
seems I now have no choice about getting the eyes removed--the Trusopt drops
stopped working for her, and the eyes ruptured a few days ago. She's scheduled for
surgery Wednesday, which was the soonest I could get it done. In the meantime,
however, she's in some pain. My vet said compresses (to help drainage--imagine
the fun holding a hot wet rag on a ferret's face), and keep using the Trusopt drops
in case there's some residual benefit even though they're not helping much.

I'm getting a little desperate about the pain. Last night I gave her a drop of Metacam
and it seemed to help but the dose (which can't be further reduced) is for a larger
ferret and it made me nervous to give it. It seemed to help, but I hope someone will
reassure me about this. She's 1.75 pounds and the dose is one drop from a tb
needle.

Today I asked the vet for a local anesthesia eyedrop tide her over, and got
Proparacaine. He checked for contraindications for ferrets and there were none
listed, but he suggested that I check here, too, before using them for any problems
w/ the caine drugs and ferrets. The label also said not to use it for painful eye
disease, but he was confident that this was to keep folks from treating the symptom
and ignoring the disease. Also, that caine may cause less blinking, but since
Cookie's blinks no longer cover her eye, this shouldn't be a factor either.

So--metacam ok? caine drops ok? Any further advice about the pain or the
operation?

If there is any scary reason NOT to use a caine drug on a ferret, please email me
directly or call me (if that's allowed and this part of my posting makes it through) at
505/722-7191.

I'm selling some things to pay for this. [Contact Clover directly for that info,
please.] And of it's not OK for me to post this part, I just ask that the moderators
just delete this part but post the rest. I really do need the information above.

Thanks,

Clover
