Barium is a non-radioactive and non-toxic material that is used to enhance internal organs for x-rays. Probably the biggest concern would be constipation but you can always give laxi-stat or other hairball remedy for that.

Barium can be taken orally (good luck with a ferret) or by inserting a small tube ito the stomach if the upper portion of the digestive tract needs to be studied. It can also be given by enema if just the bowels are being studied.
