Subject: [ferrethealth] Phenolic disinfectants
To: Ferret Health List <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>
Does anybody have any documents regarding Phenolic disinfectants and
ferrets? I have a friend who is using this sort of disinfectant to
clean the ferret room floor and their toilets. Are those disinfectants
still dangerous once the floor is dry? Or can the ferrets pick up
residue with their feet and ingest it when they lick their feet or eat
food off the floor and be slowly poisoned? Could this kill a ferret?
My friend suddenly lost a ferret today, the ferret was fine this morning
and went off food and water during the day and died this evening. I saw
the ferret and while I saw that she wasn't well, I didn't think she was
dying. My friend doesn't want to do an autopsy which I find very
disappointing so I'm wondering what on earth happened and whether it
could have been the disinfectant which she had been exposed to for 1
year and 9 months? My friend has another 3 ferrets. I'd been trying to
tell her that the disinfectant is dangerous but all she said was it is
safe to clean babies with... I meant to write to the list regarding
this a lot sooner and now I'm just so shocked at the sudden death that I
thought I would ask. Maybe if people could write that these
disinfectants are bad and possibly send documents regarding the
disinfectant and ferrets then I can print out e-mails and show my
friend. All I can find online is about the disinfectant and cats... My
friend mops the floor at least every other day so the ferrets will have
been exposed to the stuff a lot. I find the smell extremely strong and
was thinking that the ferrets probably hate it and maybe the fumes alone
can cause problems (even though the ferrets are in an outbuilding with
more ventilation than a house).
