Subject: [ferrethealth] Hole in the intestine
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Male Ferret - two years old - late alter (not a pet store ferret). Very healthy ferret. Tested for ADV every six months (negative). weight - 3 lbs

Wednesday night:
Wednesday morning he was fine, that evening when I came home from work and let everyone out of the cage. I noticed that he was very lethargy. My regular vet office was closed and we ended up with another verterinary hospital that was covering for our vets.

His temperature was normal. 101, heart and lungs sound good, spleen fine, no swelling of lymph nods)Only thing we found was
discomfort in his belly - high end. Gas.
He ended up getting S.Q. injection and Dexaethasone injection that night and was send back home for follow up with his regular vet next day.

Thursday morning:

Thursday morning around 5:30 he vomited up some water and he also had small amount of diarrhea. Thursday morning we were off to our own vet. (His temperature was 102, very lethargy, spleen fine, blood glucose good, no swelling of lymph nods) They did a barium x ray. The barium was just sitting in his stomach, not moving out. They ended up doing surgery on him, thinking it was a blockage inside. Once they got in they found no blockage inside and no signs of uclers. No forgein object at all. What he had was a hole in his intestine (way back, I believe it was in the Ileal (???) area) , his feces had leak thru the hole and was floating around inside him.

One inch of his intestine was abnormal. His intestine has been repaired. Biopsy was send out to the lab. They flush out the insides and are watching carefully for infection. I went in today to see him for two hours. He is alert and he knew I was with him. He looks good. All his vital signs are good. They are going to keep him tonight and it looks like he will be back home Saturday morning. Both vets who worked on him said, if he pulls thru this he is one lucky boy.

There was no signs of trauma or bruising inside him or outside. No, he has not fallen on any sharp object of any source or have fallen from high height.

There was no signs until Wednesday night. He was eating and running around the house.

Vets are puzzled up here:

1. Why did barium stop in the stomach area. It never went thru the intestine and out the hole.

As of today, he is passing the barium in his stool.

2. How did he get this hole in his intestine. This was a good size hole/tear. bigger that a pin hole. there was no trauma/scraping of the inside of the intestine to make you think that a foreign object had gone thru. There was no foreign object in his body. This hole was way back in the intestine.

Thanks for your help.

Wendy
