Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: barium test
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

If barium is accidently inhaled there can be a problem, as happened with a member's treasured ferret recently, but that is luckily very rare, rare enough that I can't recall any mention of another ferret who has done it and that there are few human cases of the problem in the records and most of those already had dysphagia (difficulty swallowing properly) known as an existing problem.

Barium is a contrast medium so the typical barium used is not radioactive, and actually can not be radioactive for the usual use. Using radioactive barium is a special radiological skill unlikely to be found in most vet clinics. There is at times a tendency to incorrectly assume that anything related to doing x-rays must be radioactive. Years ago I even knew a friend who was afraid of the developed x-ray films until a professor explained at some length why they are not a risk. Perhaps a similar misunderstanding led to the question?
