Hi, Tracy, and everyone else,
I read your description of what is going on with
Vanilla and my heart goes out to you and her. First,
don't beat yourself up for putting her through
surgery. Lady Ayeka was almost the same age and she
came through left adrenal and insulinoma surgery just
fine. My point is that you couldn't possibly know
there would be a bad outcome or that Vanilla would
have health issues that went beyond insulinoma and
adrenal disease. You did what was most likely to be
best for her; what would, in most cases, give her the
best chance to live a good life for a few more years.
There is always a risk with surgery. You did nothing
wrong and everything right.
Having both adrenal and insulinoma surgery at once is
a major surgery. Lethargy just a few days later is
pretty normal. Everything else you describe is very
much abnormal. I'd be particularly worried about the
bloody diarrhea and the fluid in her abdomen. The
ultrasound makes sense to me at this point. Has your
vet considered giving her torbugesic or some other
pain killer to make the ultrasound tolerable for her?
Has your vet drawn out any of the fluid to analyze it?
That might help with diagnosis as well. Has your vet
done new blood work? What does it show?
You mentioned involvement of the liver. Insulinoma
isn't cancer and it doesn't metastasize AFAIK.
Another form of pancreatic or liver cancer is very bad
news for Vanilla and I really don't know what could be
done. If your vet took a biopsy from the affected
area of her liver I'd see if the pathology could be
rushed. If you are dealing with a hepatic (sp?) cell
carcinoma you may want to consider what would be most
merciful for Vanilla. If not, and if other diagnostic
work could be done, perhaps your vet could find an
effective way to treat her.
I'm sorry I don't have any answers. I'm not a vet and
I am only suggesting things that were tried with my
ferrets when dealing with GI tract issues, fluid in
the abdomen, etc...
What I do want to stress is that, again, you did what
was best in most cases. Provided they have a good
ferret vet with a high success rate forthis type of
surgery I would encourage, not discourage, the sort of
decision for surgery you made.
I hope to see you post with better news.
All the best,
Caity and the fantastic four
