Subject: [ferrethealth] coccidia
To: fhl <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I just heard of a case of coccidia being missed by a lab
which knew it was looking for coccidia but failed to
look for all genera so totally missed it, with deaths
resulting. Watch on the FHL for more information
so that vets and the labs they use can be reminded
to look for all types of coccidia that ferrets get.

We hear of this TOO OFTEN.

Here is a past post with the types of coccidia known
to happen in ferrets at that time. It is certainly
possible that more have entered the literature since.

Please, make sure that vets and the laboratories they
use have this list and look for all types. Coccidia can
already be hard enough to spot even without looking
for the smaller and harder to find forms.

I'd been thinking there were two genera to look for
but I notice there is actually a third:

Eimeria (often missed)

Isospora (some forms also called Coccidium or Lucetina)
Here is another that is now known to not be an Isospora
which ferrets get:

Sarcocystis putorii

I had no idea that ferrets get as many types of coccidia as they do:
