Yes, it is true that enlarged spleens do seem to just plain happen with age in ferrets.

The clean margins and lack of lumps is good news since either of those can point to a more dangerous cause.

It certainly does not hurt to do a CBC (preferably along with Chemistry Panel). If numbers are off then the cause is still not pinpointed, but it does say that you need to be more aggressive than if the CBC is normal.

If the CBC is normal then in our own case with that combo we tend to figure that it is the not unusual enlargement that gets seen. Of course, older ferrets get more frequent check ups and testing, anyway, starting in late middle age.
