Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: hard belly//waiting for cbc results
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Thanks Sukie for your reply. I did just hear back from the Vet and Rayna's white count is normal (cant recall the #, but he said he was sure there is no infection), however, he said that her red count was just slightly low at 39%. He said he is not very concerned with that, since it is only slightly low.

I told him I am concerned something is going on, aside from her enlarged spleen, her activity level is not where it should be. He gave a few options: - that I could wait and have her cbc retested to see if it goes up or down - do an aspirate of the spleen to check for any cancers... or, check or glucose level to see if its insulinoma (due to her inactivity, but that still doesnt address the spleen). I highly doubt she has insulinoma -I've had her for the past 1 1/2 years (she was 1 when I adopted her), and she's always been a good eater, basically sticking to kibble (high quality, high protein kinds), baby food, or Bob C's soup - never eating any junk food... although I dont know what she ate for her first year... and she's only 2 1/2.

Should I do the aspirate, or is more bloodwork needed to find out the cause of the anemia? I read that adrenal disease can cause anemia, and with the ultrasounds the vet took, and he saw that her left gland was slightly enlarged, could that be what we are looking at? And that could also be causing her inactivity? She is more itcy than my other 2 ferrets. She also has some slight slight fur loss at the base of her tail (I know, big adrenal sign - but she had that last winter and it regrew back in, I read it was due to seasonal changes, so I was waiting to see if it would regrow back in again... but with all these other signs...). Would her spleen be enlarged due to the anemia, that is due to the adrenal disease? And her inactivity is due to the anemia? Could adrenal disease be causing these 2 symptoms? Do you think that is what I am looking at here?
Thank you so much for any advice!
Andrea
