Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Serious help with coccidia - threatning to close shelter!
Did all ferrets and all other animals that can get coccidia strains (including humans) get treated? There is a vet (?) member on the Miamiferret forum who said that at a recent conference it was announced that some coccidia species are zoonotics and are nowhere near as species specific as previously found.
Meanwhile, do not adopt any out and don't take any in, and treat everyone.
Check with those who adopted ferrets. If illness broke then they, too, need to treat and quarantine, given the deaths.
It is great that your vet is checking with the university; that is a marvelous idea!
In the past (a long time ago) there was a mutant strain of coccidia which disappeared due to quarantines and treating but it needed a longer run of Albon than usual and all individuals needed to be treated. I can not recall how long the medication run was except that it was quite long, but I will ask someone who might remember.
