Subject: [ferrethealth] sugar
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
I've had an ongoing dialogue with a major manufacturer of ferret foods & treats who've assured me their nutritionalist have approved their product for occasional use. But I can't get them to tell me how much sugar is "safe" for ferrets.
I've heard ferrets cannot process ANY sugar & it just accumulates in their spleen until they develop insulinoma. Is that true? Is there a "safe" amount of sugar (since most lax contains it)?
I've since tossed all sugared snacks & lax. His only sugar intake now is small bit of mushed banana in morn (no more than size of raisin). Is that safe or should I quit? Would the past usage of lax (twice/wk) & snacks (training treats after litter box usage - up to 4/day) cause insulinoma?
I ask because my 1 y.o. albino just started "speed-bumping". After a while of vigorous play he sometimes go beside or under an obstacle and lay there with eyes open not blinking (sometimes sliding forward on belly like a snake). When he does that usually he'll come running if I pick up a dangling toy or sit up if I walk towards him. Sometimes he'll be unmoving-unblinking if I waive my fingers in front of his eyes but always sits up if I touch his head. He does not appear to lick his lips, which my vet told me is a sign of insulinoma.
I don't know if that is typical ferret behavior. He always has access to 3 water bowls, 1 water bottle, & three bowls of diff foods. But my heat is difficult to regulate and often a bit warm.
Any advice to a paranoid, 1st time ferret-Daddy greatly appreciated.
