Subject: [ferrethealth] IBD we think (repost)
To: "FHL" <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

Felix is a 2-year-old neutered male who was completely healthy up until last
weekend. Last Sunday morning he threw up, which we don't consider that unusual
unless it persists. He seemed fine and I left later that day for NYC. When I got back
Wednesday afternoon, he seemed thinner. Because I work out of my house and the
ferret cage is near my office, I was able to monitor his eating, and saw that he
wasn't eating much at all. Friday morning I called my regular vet, who wasn't in, so
ended up taking him to another ferret vet in another practice who's never seen him
before. We thought there might be a blockage, so she did X-rays and barium and
everything came back clear. His CBC was normal except his lipase value was high.
She diagnosed possible IBD and said she would also treat him for Helicobacter and
put him on the following: 1 ml 3x/day of Clarithromycin (125/5m suspension), 1/8
tablet of fanotidine 1x/day and next week we start him on Imuran.

So far I have seen no improvement; in fact, just the opposite. He is actively refusing
to eat and drink and I have to gently force feed/water him. Then I thought maybe
the start of MegaE but he's keeping everything down and there are no weird noises
in his throat. He willingly takes ferretone and laxatone/nutrical. He just won't eat
anything of any substance. Yesterday I started him on chicken baby food (I have
turkey too). The first bowl he lapped up and then has fought me. I'm making Duck
Soup today just to get him through until tomorrow when hopefully I can get in to
see my regular vet. He's acting normally when he's out -- running around and
jumping up on stuff, although he seems a little more tired, understandably.

However, his behavior is the oddest thing. When I'm in the kitchen he follows me in
there and seems to desperately want something to eat. He follows my every footstep
and sits up on his hind legs to see what I'm doing. He acts crazy when I'm in there.
It's like he WANTS to eat but he WON'T eat. Has anyone seen anything like this
before? and any feedback on this vet's advice?

Amy
