Subject: [ferrethealth] Epogen Shots- right choice???
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Background: Podo is a wonderful, tiny 1.07 lb 3 yr old female ferret. She is independent and very sweet! Over the last past years, her body has taken a couple of hits. When she was one, she became extremely anemic and was put on epogen shots. This helped greatly until she could grow stronger to get her spleen removed.

Over the past year, her health has declined immensely. She has been thought to have Adrenal gland tumor and diagnosed with insulinoma. Because of her weakness, the doctor has chosen to keep her on a medicine path, thinking her body could not handle surgery. She was punt on 5 drops of Azium twice a day. We already tried Proglyem (??spelling, which did not help as much as the Azium. The Azium helped her stool and her activity level increased.

In the last couple of days, her energy level has decreased vastly. I brought her to the vet, her RBC was 3.95, while her WBC was 1.95 . The vet believes she has an infection or tumor of the bone marrow. Surgery might kill her and chemo with her low WBC, the vet thinks will kill her too. SHe is very weak.

Question: Doctor has suggested to put her on epogen shots- three times a week at 0.05mL/injection. Is this the right course, or am I getting my hopes up?? The vet's prognosis is not good for her at all. I wanted opinions on other course of treatments that can help- or is epogent he only thing to do?
