Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Advice needed re spaying operation
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Your vet just automatically originally gave the typical cat and dog timing because it gets said so often. Just a slip of the tongue.

There ARE some ferrets who do need the long time; we've had one who needed even longer. If the ferret has a condition which makes emptying the stomach difficult a longer time is used sometimes to avoid the risks of aspirated reflux. In the case of our Scooter he had a congenital problem with his stomach and small intestine which caused them to progressively lose tone and dilate, getting thinner and thinner walls, and being less and less able to move food. Motility drugs could not be used because of the risk that they would cause the thin walls to rip. Scooter had some of the less commonly encountered neural crest genetic variant related health problems, including those (thought to be due to problems with the nerves of those organs) and syndactyly.
