Subject: [ferrethealth] Bear's kidney values (update again)
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hi all.
So, a quick recap: Bear had insulinoma-related pancreas surgery on Dec 29, which caused transitional diabetes and kidney damage. He had BAD BUN and Creatinine levels for the first week++ after surgery.

So, now we're about 5- 6 weeks from surgery. (Please check archives for his daily BUN and Creatinine levels.)

His BUN today was 25. His Creatinine was 2.3 . His first BUN was 120 (!) and his first Creatinine was 9.4? or something close. So. Things are definitely better. His urine concentration is not normal... I can get those exact numbers, but I want to say it was 1081 or something close. Still, the vet is optimistic and says we can reduce his sub-cu fluids to 30-40 ml every other day. His next recheck will be in 3 months.

So. Bear is acting just fine, and has a good appetite and activity level. He's on Renagen and diet-wise is eating a mix of canned K/D and chicken. His treats include occasional foamy fries or dry kibble. Oh, and he's getting hi-vite drops (for the vitamin B), ferretone, and CoQ10 & fish oil for Omega 3s. (Actually, I also occasionally add some salmon oil which has additional Omega 3s and Omega 6s.) Are Omega *6*s BAD? Or is it just that Omega 3s are that much better?

Anyway, that's all I can think of. Yes, Bear is on the mend, but his Creatinine and urine concentration could still improve. It's clear he did have kidney damage. So, word to the wise... even if you have an awesome vet, be sure to insist that they check blood sugar after partial pancreatectomies for the first few days!! We could have prevented Bear's kidney damage had we caught the high blood sugar earlier.

Thank god we were able to get help from some knowledgeable vets up here in Baltimore and Abingdon afterwards. :-) And thanks to all of you. I'll let you know how he's doing after his next re-check. right now, he's curled up next to us in bed. I'm so glad he's home.

I can only hope that his kidneys will somehow continue to heal.

-Andrea
