Subject: [ferrethealth] Stomach Ulcer
To: FHL <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

My 5 year old male, Duke, seems to be showing signs of a stomach ulcer.
He's been making a strange sound, usually while eating, which I can only
assume is what teeth grinding must sound like. Then last night I
noticed some dark colored stools that were not solid, which were from
him. I'm fairly sure that it must be an ulcer from what I've read.
Duke has insulinoma and gets .5ml of Prednisolone (5mg/5ml) twice per
day. He used to get 1ml twice per day, but we decided to reduce it to
the .5ml because he was not tolerating it well at all. He was drooling,
gagging and foaming at the mouth every time he got his meds. I'm afraid
that the meds and the stress of getting them have probably caused this.

This leads me to a few questions:

1) What is the best treatment? I searched the message archives as well
as a general internet search and have gotten mixed results on what works
best. One suggested group of meds, from a vet, was Amoxicillin,
Metronidazole, and Pepto-Bismol, but the article warns that
Metronidazole is not well tolerated because of it's bad taste. It also
seemed that Carafate, Biaxin, and Amoxicillin were a common treatment combo.

2) Is there anything I can do for him to ease his discomfort until he
goes to the vet? I've seen Pepto-Bismol (1/15th of a tablet) and
Pepcid-AC (no dosage listed) mentioned as possibilities, but I've never
given either of these to a ferret before. How on earth would you split
a pill 15 times accurately anyhow?

Thanks in advance.
Jen
