Subject: [ferrethealth] Stumped - pls see if you recognize symptoms
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hi,

Back on January 17th my 4 year old male underwent adrenal surgery. Everything went fine - dr. checked everything else while in there and all looked/felt normal. He came home and was recovering well. Incision healed nicely, attitude great, eating, pooping, etc. About a week and a half later, he started to throw up. It happened about 5 hours after eating and was still undigested food. He got up, and ran abck and started playing. I isolated him from the others and watched him closely. He was pooping (still a little cow-pat-ish but moving through). The next day he did it again but on an empty stomach. Sort of a gagging and throwing up spittle. He finished, and went on to wolf down his breakfast. He went back to the vet and she ended up keeping him for observation for about 5 days. During that time, his appetite was good (ad soup), no fever, maintained weight, never got dehydrated and bloodwork was all normal. He was playful and alert. She did a barium xray and there was no blockage. He was kept on the amoxi that he had been on post-op and was also given sucralfate to help with the nausea. He did have some intermittant diahhrea. She sent him home with instructions to continue. Tomorrow it will be two weeks since he first started throwing up. He is still doing it. Still no fever, he's pooping, he's hydrated, he's playful, but he throws up about once a day (usually when he's on an empty stomach such as first thing in the morning, but he has thrown up food several times). He's a soup addict and won't touch his kibble, but that is normal behavior for him. I should point out that his three other cagemates are all fine except for one that threw up one time back at the beginning. We suspected a virus at first, but that one never threw up again and is fine, while the other still hasn't gotten better. I threw out all my food and bought new stuff just in case it was bad. There is no toxic substance within 6 feet of the floor that anyone could have gotten into.

I don't know what to do, and my vet is stumped, too. We are hoping this will simply pass but in the meantime, it breaks my heart to hear him wretching. Short of going back in to take a look, I think we have tried everything. Has anyone seen or heard of this? Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Joan
