Subject: [ferrethealth] Bad reaction to benadryl
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
I gave my 8 year old female ferret .5cc of dye-sugar free children's benadryl to help with an itchy tiny mast cell tumor. She had a bilateral adrenalectomy 2 years ago. She also receives liquid melatonin daily. The benadryl caused her to initially become dazed and sleepy. Within hours she became lethargic and wobbly. Taking a few steps and collapsing. I fed her soup round the clock and helped her in and out of her litter pan. Norma poops and pee. She became cooler and was on a heating pad during the night to keep her warm. She slowly has been recovering becoming more alert and gaining more energy each hour, 12 hours later. I never have seen benadryl cause my ferret to be this extreme in lethargy. Her eyes were alert and bright the entire time. She would go to run and stop and fall over and lay there. She also had teeth grinding which I attributed to nausea from her wobbly/dizziness. 24 hours later her teeth grinding has stopped, she has resumed use of her litter pan on her own and is eating soup on her own. However, she is still spacey and tired. She seems to still be coming out of the huge lethargic daze the benadryl had her in 24 hours later. Could the melatonin with the benadryl have caused such a sedating reaction or could she have had an allergy or bad reaction to the benadryl. Any info appreciated on why she was effected so intensely.
