My suspicion is that you saw cumulative sedating response, and the antihistamine amount was on the high side. We have found that ferrets vary a lot in how much does that to them. One of ours used to get very sleep on just 0.3 ml of the standard pediatric Benedryl elixir concentration without also having any melatonin. It was one of her important meds since she had asthma.
DO discuss it with your treating vet.
How about also discussing surgery?
