Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Melatonin implant warning from vet
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hello!

We started 10 ferrets on these for 1 cycle when they were ranging from
mostly 1 year olds to two that were around 2 and 3.

Out of all of them not one winter coat set in, and not one behavior change
or lethargy came into play. Meanwhile, inside of them, they're getting
doses of melatonin they would not normally be recieving due to our hectic
schedule and their lighting.

So, I was please with it. However, since starting the rescue, we can't
afford this as a prophylactic anymore.

There are a few pros and cons, and one major con for promoting this: if
the disease happens to be genetic for the ferret in question, as opposed
to environmentally induced (by lighting), then the implants may not help
that individual. This is an issue as some ferrets will have genetic
factors differing from others, as far as how susceptible they are. So
people who have them on prophylactic implants may still see disease.

However, the times for prophylactic implants have changed - instead of
every 4 months it is now ever 6, I believe. This is the consensus amoung
vets I have talked to and other rescues. I believe it is a wonderful idea
- even if ferrets still get the disease, at least you know you did your
best in providing winter levels of melatonin. If I had the money all of
mine would still be on melatonin.

Another con is that with melatonin implants, some say the symptoms of
adrenal are masked if they get it anyway. I am confused on this point...at
some point wouldn't you see hair loss if the implants were not helping?
That was the only con to the implants I could think of. I still am unsure
on this point, any help or answers would be appreciated.
