I agree that prednisone or prednisolone should be
given with food. For our ferrets it's always
accompanied by Bob Church's Chicken Gravy. Nyssa is
practically living on Gravy now so she eats lots of
food at the same time she gets prednisolone
(pediapred).
Even given with food prednisone/prednisolone can cause
ulcers. We saw this with Nyssa and have limited her
dosage to .25ml (6.7mg/5ml concentration) twice daily
as a result. Since she's being treated for late stage
lymphoma and needed more in the way of steroids than
that to keep her feeling good she also gets depo
medrol injections quarterly. Depo medrol or vetalog
(which Nyssa was on previously) may be an alternative
way of administering a cortisol for ferrets who cannot
tolerate prednisone.
Our vets have also used oral dexamethasone as an
alternative to prednison but not do to stomach
problems. Dexamethasone was only chosen when
prednisone proved ineffective. I'm not at all sure
that it's any easier on the stomach.
The usual disclaimer applies: I am not a vet, just a
moderately experienced ferret owner.
All the best,
Caity and the fearsome foursome
(Nyssa, Zephyr, Ella, and Chin Soon)
