Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Xray shows stone? blockage? what?
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

If I am remembering things correctly, it looks like that spot in the vicinity of his
spleen. And you said he has been getting fat...is his abodmen look swollen? It could
a be lesion in his spleen, and his spleen could be enlarged, which explain the weight
gain. Enlarged spleens are common in ferrets. What did you mean when you said he
dribbles alot?

Xrays a great and all, but they dont always tell you the whole story. I would
recommend having a vet ultrasound his abdomen. It will tell you more about what
that spot is that you are seeing and if it is real or not. If his spleen is enlarged,
ultrasound can give some inclination as to why. You can take a look at his heart too
with ultrasound, which will allow you to look for a tumor there as well.

I am a big fan of ultrasound, as my vets have often been misled by results from an
xray. Ultrasounds can also guide for biopsy, which may tell you more about what is
going on if it is some sort of tumor or lesion on an organ.

I need to add now that I am not a vet...only a caring person owned by ferrets. I have
had my fair share of problems with vets and share in your frustration. Just
remember that vets are people to and are fallible. If you dont feel you are getting
the care you deserve and are paying for though, speak up. I have worked in an
animal hospital for seven years now, and I know that while the vets do make
mistakes, they are always more than willing to try and make up for it. I hope you can
get some answers...Best of luck to you and yours.

back there today with my digital camera.) The vet doesn't know what that opaque
round thing is and asked me to post it. He doesn't seem to think it's a blockage, and
Buddy doesn't seem to be in intestinal distress, but I'd sure like to know about this.
