The mesentery is a membrane of connective tissue that supports the organs in the abdomen and attaches them to the wall of the body cavity. There are lymph nodes in the mesentery, as well.

Like fert_lover, I also appreciate the benefits of ultrasound, which can reveal things in skilled hands that x-rays will not. However, the reverse is also true. Ultrasound is not a panacea, since it, like any other diagnostic imaging technique, is susceptible to mis-interpretation. (I once had a ferret diagnosed with heartworm on the basis of an ultrasound. There was no sign of worms on necropsy a few months later, and I don't think it was because the heartworm treatment got rid of them.)

Not being a vet, I don't have any idea what that spot is on the radiographs, and I hope you have good luck in finding out. I am a little amazed that you got such great images of them, since I'm new to digital cameras myself. I hadn't thought of trying that, and I simply asked my vet to scan a recent radiograph into her computer. She won't have it for me until next week, so I don't know how good it'll look, especially since it's her first try at using the scanner. But I think I'm going to start taking my camera to appointments from now on! Thanks for the idea -- it should save a lot of time and trouble, and I will know instantly if I have a good image.

Brett
