HORMONAL SYMPTOMS are what you are observing Belinda.
Raging hormoes cause the male ferrets to thin out.
Once out of rut he should gain weight back and get a
softer coat. However, if for some reason his system
is not able to recover before the rut returns he will
stay thin and may loose hair on his tail as well.

If you are not breeding, why not consider a neuter?
That will give you a plush male ferret.
