The things that amaze me about what Chris encountered is that we have had a number of early neuter (not later neuter) males and being neutered has not caused any weakness or shortened lives. We have had some who could jump right over 30" barriers each try without breaking a sweat, one from a sitting position; he would just uncoil and go right over in one fluid motion. Deaths in the 8th year of life have not been unusual.
It would be interesting to learn a few things to see if Chris just encountered an aberration or if neutering late works best with certain approaches:
What have others have encountered with late neutered males?
How the procedure was done in each case (anesthesia types, surgical technique types, point in heat or out of heat when the surgery occurred, etc?
Also, do later neutered males wind up with any social hierarchy changes which might influence behavior or stress levels?
