Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: How to Treat Scratches?
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Usually, scratches are not of concern because they heal fine on their own.

Don't use any human over the counter product unless your vet tells you first that it is safe to do so because some which are safe for humans are unsafe for ferrets, some greatly so. For a thing like this as long as there is not further injury, injury to something sensitive like an eye, or infection you could probably leave a phone message for your vet during office hours so that the vet could back to you at her or his convenience -- as long as that approach is not overly used and you have a good relationship with your treating veterinarian.

Make sure there is no indication of further injury, especially ones that would require immediate veterinary care, such as traumatic injuries from a fall, or a scratched cornea of an eye.

Watch for signs of infection and get to the vet if those occur.

Our vet has at times had us swab on diluted Xenodine.
