Subject: [ferrethealth] i need advice!!
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

I have two sable color ferrets. Theo and Meadow. They are both about 1 1/2 years of age. First of all let me start off by saying that we did not know that both distemper and rabies shots should not be done on the same day. Yesterday (2/17/06) Our ferrets went into the vet to get a checkup and both distemper and rabies shots, this was at about 4:00 P.M. When we left the vets ofice it was about 5:30 P.M. When we got home neither ferret would eat or drink. They went to sleep. At about 11:00 P.M Meadow started to throw up. Only once she actally threw up clear white liquid with some white chuncks and about 5 other times she was trying to throw up but couldnt. She was digging and throwing herself on her side and laying there with her mouth wide open almost as if she was choking, When she first started to throw up she was breathing extreamly fast then when she was done her breaths were shallow. I picked her up and she was almost as if she was lifeless her body was limp and she wasnt responding well. So we put her in her carrier and took her to a 24hr emergency pet clinic. When we were half way there she was acting normal again. so we decided to take her over to my boyfriends moms house cause she has lots of experience with ferrets, so she could look at her. When we got there meadow was playing and just being a ferret. I brought her watebottle but she wouldnt drink from it directly so i put water in my hand and she was licking it up like crazy. Well at about midnight we left and decided to come home, thinking she was fine. well when we got back home she seamed as though she was depressed almost. so we rushed back toward the 24hr emergency pet clinic. When we got there i explained everything. They completly checked her over and concluded that she was dehydrated and Her abdomen is soft with mild discomfort. All day she had no diarrhea but while we were there she had slight diarrhea with some blood. it happened twice. They gave her 30cc of SQ fluids and also gave us a medication to give her twice a day which is called Metronidazole. Since we got home at 3:00A.M this morning i have been up watching her sleep and her every movement. she has drank some water and peed a few times. Her stool is solid. she has munched on some food but not much as usual. She has also been itching like crazy..which we were told by our vet to give her .70cc of childrens benadryl..but the itching has gone down. I'm also worried about her breathing she seams as though she is weezie..almost like she has a hairball stuck in her throat. She is very sleepy and not as playful..granted that she wasnt really as crazy as theo. With all that said i was in need of an "outside" opinion of what you think. It would help me greatly. Thank you,Tiffany
