Subject: [ferrethealth] Tumor In Ear
To: <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

My ferret, age 5, has a tumor in his ear.

Three weeks ago I noticed dried blood in the ear. No other symptoms.

My vet saw a small polyp and some oozing in the ear and we put him on
Tresaderm drops for 5 days.
The bleeding seemed less, but did not stop.

This ferret then had what I thought to be an insulinomic seizure a week
after I noticed the bleeding.

A 4 hour fasting test was 136, a six hour test was 117.
A biop of the tumor was also done at that time that showed non cancerous.
Blood work was good, except for high protein levels.
We are waiting on further testing results to test for types of inflammation
and/or cancers

I have seen no further seizures.
No head tilt, scratching at the ear,

Yesterday there was more than usual bleeding from the ear, the tumor has
grown a lot, we can now feel a swelling behind/under the ear.

My vet attempted to go through the ear to try and remove/cauterize the tumor
but was unable to do so.

She then made an incision behind the ear, but was still unable to remove
much, as it is so deep into the ear. She was concerned about nerve damage,
and even brain damage.

We talked about ear canal ablation that is done with dogs. My vet feels this
in a ferret is beyond her skills.

We have a skilled surgeon here that has been working with my dog for 10
weeks to repair tissue damage from a probable Brown Recluse bite.
I may consult with him early next week, he is off till Monday.

I searched for this type of surgery in ferrets, but came up with little to
nothing.

Anyone here have experience with this type of tumor/surgery in a ferret?

For now, he is on the Tresaderm drops, and antibiotics.

He is otherwise a good strong boy, I'd like to help him stay that way if
possible.

Ardith
