Subject: [ferrethealth] Need advice about fat ferret
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Ever since I increased my ferret's prednisone to about 1.5 mg twice a day (for insulinoma), his weight gain is out of control. He's been to the vet several times and the vet says it's fat, and he's only slightly concerned. Previously, the highest this ferret weighed was 2 lb 4 oz. Now he's up around 3 lb 12 oz over about an 8 or 10 week period. He's totally stopped eating kibble for about the past year now, so he gets a soup I make with kibble, A/D and baby food, so I know how much he's eating. It's the same he ate before he was on the higher dose of pred. I've made his soup more watery so he's eating the same amount but not getting as much actual food and doesn't overeat. I'm making sure he gets exercise by having him chase me around and playing with him one-on-one to get him active. I don't know what else to do? But I'm uncomfortable with this weight and he seems to be too.

I fully believe this weight gain is from the pred, but without the pred, his glucose levels are only in the 50s. Should I suggest changing from prednisone to prednisolone or even to dex? Any other options? I need some ideas to suggest to the vet who usually goes along with anything I suggest to him that I've found here or from other ferret owners.

Thanks for any ideas!

Linda
