In our experiences regular radiographs cannot show a
hairball or similar blockage due to the fact that the
blockage is caused by material which looks like
tissue.

A barium radiograph is needed to see what the transit
time is, if there is a specific area where the transit
is impeded, etc. Many times even with a radiograph
you see nothing but gas or a distended abdomen.
However it clearly gives the vet the area if interest
for an explortatory procedure .
