Subject: [ferrethealth] Long term diarrhea and problems
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

In Sept of 2005, one of my babies started with loose stools. I immediately put in our "hospital" so that I could watch him carefully. No new babies had come into the house and nothing had changes food or treat wise. However, I had noticed before that if given 2 yougurt treats, he would get loose stools.

After 3 days of his stool become even worse, almost water, off to the vet we went. He was put on antibiotic, given sub fluids, and something for the diarrhea. not sure what it is called now. By the end of treatment in 7 days, he was back to almost normal. Until December.

Back to the vet again. Rdical weight loss. A new medicine, carafate. no antibiotic this time. If it could have gotten worse, it did. I thought he was going to die. I rummaged through my medical supplies, after reading on here about pred and knew I had some. I started giving it to him with pumpkin mixed with ad and baby food. He got better immediately. not perfect but better.

Back to the vet again a week ago. I honestly thought he was going to die from the weight loss. They gave me more pred, took a stool sample, (they looked quickly and said that they couldnt see anything) we will get the results back from the lab by friday. took a blood sample, a bit low on the sugar but not enough to hurt him, they said. i really dont think that this is any type of bacteria. i fully think its just an intestinal irritation of some sort. he does not grind.

when I got home I read everything on this board. I switched him from ad to id, and gave him id hard food (science diet) to eat as well. Normally they are on zupreem. pumpkin added to the canned id, and pepcid ac and pred. I read about maybe being allergic to some of the food. In 3 days he is back to just about normal! He is gaining his weight back, had bright eyes, and wants out of the hospital!

the other thing. while in the hospital, all food and water intake is closely watched, along with output. He has 2 bottles, one with water and one with pedia. both are changed daily. yesterday, i noticed he had not been drinking any of his water, so out of curiosity, i tapped the ball a couple of times and not one drop would come out. ALWAYS check the ball daily when you fill it.
