Subject: [ferrethealth] re: melatonin implants
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hello Brett and list readers.

We have been using the melatonin implants on personal
and shelter ferrets for several years now.

I must tell you we have gone through over 200 imlants
and have had no adverse reactions other than the
occassional sleepy ferret for a day or two after
implant.

We have had only 2 ferrets not respond to the implants
a far fewer number than non responsive to lupron -
and yes we have had ferrets on monthly lupron
injections for upp to 14 consecutive months for
adrenal (bi lateral) with complications.

I and our local shelter vet are very impressed with
the melatonin implant.

On average all shelter ferrets age 4 years and up are
on them prophylactically. The bi lateral ferrets
receive an implant at time of singular adrenalectomy (
we are housing for quality of life in the best way we
can with limited funding).

I have also utilized implants on elder persoanl
ferrets and am VERY IMPRESSED. The most recent
transformation was an 8 plus year old female who was
spayed at age 2 (no litters intentionally). She had
in her early days been a plump and spirited cinnamon
gal. Shortly after her spay she turned to a dew gal
and thinned. As she approached age 8 her coat was
coarse and getting thin. I opted to implant the
melatonin. Within 3 weeks of implant her coat was
filling in at 4 weeks from implant her color began to
change. Now 3 months after implantattion this elderly
gal is a robust 3 pound cinnamon ferret who has an
insatiable appetite for turkey adn looks like she is
2-3 years of age. She wants to be out for several runs
per day instead of one. She is now nearing 8.5 years
of age and I am hoping to break records with her
longevity-- Her mother adn grandmother made it to 9.5
years... and looked wretched compared to her.

She is just one of the miracles we have encountered in
battling hormonal issues her ... Email me and I will
fill you in on more.

Thanks to Dr Murray who was kind enough in several
incidents to trouble shoot the ferret hormonal issues
and confirm our suspicions for melatonin therapy!
