I emailed Dr. [Name removed since this was a case consultationwith an expert as per
FHL rules] about Mojave. He said the grainy stool suggests
an inflammatory lesion in the intestine or a foreign body.
He also suggested that I do a glucose retest because 33 is very low to
not have any more significant signs.
I was home sick yesterday, so I did what Mike said (thanks, Mike!) and I
called the vet to see if they could retest his glucose. They seemed to
have never thought of retesting it with a glucose meter.
After reading a copy of the email, the vet stopped insisting that it was
insulinoma and gave me some Metronidazole and Z/D. She really didn't
think it was necessary to retest his glucose. I asked her to do it
anyway just for my piece of mind. It was 82! She may not have much
experience with ferrets, but she is definitely dedicated saying that she
had been researching ferrets for the past three days as I had.
He was starting to act a little better yesterday morning before I took
him. He was a little livelier than he had been and he seemed to want to
eat on his own again. He also gained 10 grams of weight.
My only concern now is what is it if it recurs for the third time?
Also, I was wondering how much and how often should I give him some
laxatone?
Third, is there some reason why vets don't take glucose levels when they
first see a new ferret so they can have a reference point?
