Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Discontinuing oral melatonin
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hi,
I've seen no ill effects in my groupof fuzzies after discontinuing it.

I have five ferrets who were on oral melatonin from August until late November. I started all five on oral melatonin after reading posts on the list serve, and because one female - Nicole- developed adrenal disease in July 2005(left adrenal) and had surgery in August(successful - bald areas regrew hair) She also was given a lupron implant in September. My veterinarian said giving the melatonin as well would be fine.

However since the group are kept in my bedroom at night and part of the day (freedom of the house morning and evening only)and my bedroom has just natural daylight(except for a 30 min period while I get ready for bed) I decided that during periods of natural early darkness to discontinue the melatonin from about November. I'm starting them on it again in the next few days since days are starting to get longer. This was just a decision based on thinking (no scientific basis) that may being on melatonin contiuously would eventually make it less effective. I can't say I noticed them changing in any way after discontinuing it - they seem to cause as much bangs, crashes and chaos as before.

I'll see if there is any difference when they start on it again. I used health food store orange flavored tabs, and they got about one mg a day - usually around 4pm which may have not been early enough I guess. Sunrise here is usually around 6am come Spring so I'll see if earlier dosing causes drowsiness. Hard to tell when they do sleep so much.
Meryl
