Subject: [ferrethealth] Prevention of adrenal disease
I have read many recent discussions on using melatonin to prevent adrenal d=
isease caused by lack of a normal seasonal variation of daylight hours.
As a British ferret owner I find that there is less of a preponderance (so =
far) of housing ferrets in open wire mesh type cages in living areas.
I house my ferrets(2) in a 6' long x3' x3' wooden cage with only the front =
being wire mesh. This cage is on a worktop in a utility room used mainly fo=
r storage, fridge and freezer etc. Inside the cage the ferrets have a choic=
e of sleeping quarters, a large cat type igloo with a medium size doorway a=
nd a wooden sleeping box with a small hole (3") in the top. the room is unh=
eated and normally unlit except for a large window and light spillage from =
an open doorway to my kitchen. The ferrets are free to leave the cage at an=
y time except between midnight and 8am (so long as someone is at home) via =
a long 4" dia pipe which leads to the floor. It is rare to see the ferrets =
emerge after their normal 3-4 hour morning play time, maybe 1/2 to 1 hr abo=
ut 8pm and occasional snack and toilet visit (on these occasions I ignore t=
hem and they go staight back to bed). I dont have a problem with the wooden=
cage, the ferrets are 100% litter box accurate and the cage given a good s=
crub out every 2 weeks with a ferret safe disinfectant.
I know that it is nice to have your fuzzy friends on view all the time when=
they wake but if they wake to do their toileting and are exposed to a lit =
room and human presence this is a distraction from what they should be doin=
g, sleeping.
Maybe the living area scenario is too much of a unnatural lifestyle for you=
r best friends.
