Subject: [ferrethealth] Nilla Histopath report results
To: "ferrethealth@smartgroups.com" <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

I got back Nilla's histopath report.

It is below. I would like to know, if someone can interpret this. I want
to do the Tufts protocol for her. Is this advisable given the readings.

xxxxxxx

BIOPSY with microscopic (1 tissue)

Source/History
Approximately 1/2 cm, subcutaneous, firm mass of inguinal region (suspect
lymph node).

Microscopic Description
Numerous sections of lymph node, lymph node capsule, fat, and connective
tissue are examined on one slide. They lymph node regions exhibit
effacement of architecture by broad sheets of monomorphic, round cells.
These cells are supported by a delicate fibrovascular stroma. The round
cells have very little cytoplasm, large, vesicular nuclei, and prominent,
often multiple nucleoli. The mitotic rate is 0-2/HPF. Occasional apoptotic
cells are seen. These cells are intermediate in size, being 12-16 microns
in diameter. The mass is occaisionally detected within the lymph node
capsule and exterior to that capsule.

Diagnosis: Lymph Node: Lymphoma

Comments:
Lymphosarcoma is a reasonably common malignancy of the ferret. The form
seen here is most consistent with what is described as the adult form
where peripheral lymph nodes are effaced by the neoplastic lymphocytes.

Pathologist: [Name removed as per rules] DVM Ph.D.
