Subject: [ferrethealth] hind leg weakness HELP!!

Hi

I am a Vet student from Santiago, Chile. Ferrets have been around for only=
a few years over here (10 years o so), so vets don=92t have that much expe=
rience in them, I would really appreciate any ideas on this case, the owner=
is also a vet student.

On Monday afternoon the owner notices her 5 month old spayed male ferret li=
mping a little on his hind legs, enlarged lymph nodes, when he walked he ha=
d slight trouble placing his rear legs in position, he was alert playing an=
d eating normal.

On Tuesday he had a fever of 40,5=BAC, hind leg lymph nodes where normal b=
ut the front leg ones where enlarged, he seemed to be walking a bit better=
. He was started on baytril and Ketoprophen.
On Wednesday he seemed the same, temperature 37 =BAC, he was taken to the v=
et, lymph nodes where normal, X ray showed no abnormalities, continued with=
baytril and ketoprophen. =

On Thursday he is dragging one of his hind legs, he will have blood work do=
ne today

Last year there was another ferret, spayed male 5 months old with the same =
symptoms but no lymph node enlargement, in 5 days he went from just limping=
from his hind legs, to dragging them and then being completely paralyzed. =
He died, at the necropsy there where no macroscopic abnormalities found, b=
ut there no samples collected for biopsy. =

Both ferrets come from the same breeder but from different lines of ferrets=
. They where spayed at 3-4 months, They where fed Iams kitten and Royal can=
in baby cat at the breeders and then Nutrience kitten and Royal canin Kitte=
n by the new owners.

They where both vaccinated with Pfiezer vanguard, we don=92t get any ferret=
vaccines over here, so ferrets are vaccinates with dog vaccines.

Here there are only a handful of good exotic animal vets, and they don=92t =
know, what could be affecting this ferrets. Any ideas would be appreciated=
. Could this be DIM or juvenile lymphoma?

Thank you for your help
