I'm not sure if this will be helpful for your little one but perhaps you
and your vet can find something from my experience. I can share my
personal experience with a chest injury.

In Dec I ripped rib cartilage from my sternum. I'm still dealing with
this today. The main treatment was taking down inflammation. This type
of injury takes a very long time to heal, 3-6 months.

Breathing was/is very difficult when the inflammation kicks up. I also
have trouble with nasal passages, they swell too and I get a stuffy
nose. In fact, that is the first symptom I notice when the
inflammation increases, the breathing is second.

Laying down was almost impossible because of the pain and not being able
to breath.

This injury affected my heart, which might explain why the little one
acts frightened if he is having enough chest inflammation to press on
the veins to the heart. My heart pounded, skipped beats, gave me
electrical shocks, and felt anxious like an adrenalin rush - all from
chest inflammation. The inflammation compressed my lungs so I was
unable to get air into my lungs. I opened mouth breathed too.

Also, with rib cartilage, if it tears, a slipped rib can contribute to
or cause the same symptoms.

If someone stepped on the little one or he got shut in a door, or fell
this might cause his injury.

Hiatal hernia can be repaired.

If he has inflammation, check with your vet if Metacam and/or Cosequin,
and/or an adequate dosage of steroid might be helpful. Ferrets CANNOT
take human NSAIDS, they are deadly to them.

I don't know if any of this will be helpful, I hope that you will be
able to find something in my experience to help your little one. Feel
free to email me if you have any questions on my experience.

healing hugs. tle
