Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Misshapen sternum = serious woe
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hi Brett. You brought up something I thought of on the way home...but then I immediately thought I was thinking all crazy since what the heck do I know about skeletal issues? :)

I thought well why not remove the offending portion of the sternum if it's poking his diaphram? Is it possible to just remove the lowest portion of the sternum and associated ribs (probably the last two that are attached to the sternum) without causing him a problem from the shortening?

Our vet is well experienced, but of course this isn't somethign he sees everyday! In fact, he said he hasn't seen this sort of thing often in any creature. He's working on taking a digital photo of the xray now, so hopefully I'll be able to get that up for viewing today.

I did learn a bit more after callling the original vet he'd been to before. The first gal I spoke to apparently wasn't reading much into the notes, but the vet gave me better info. Gus was born in March, 2005. He was purchased in July and the pet store included a well visit to this local vet, which he had. He checked out fine at his well visit on July 25, 2005. On August 16 he returned with his breathing issues. They did "front" xrays (I'm picking those up on Monday) and saw no defects in the rib cage, but the vet said when I described his recent xray that her views wouldn't show such a thing. He did have a slightly enlarged heart on their xrays in August. As of yesterday, the heart and lungs look/sound great.

Thx!
