I am so very sorry to hear of your loss.
Although there are people on this list who are a LOT more qualified
than I, to me it sounds like it may be Disseminated Idiopathic Myositis
(DIM).
I've never had any experience with this new disease, but I do know
that it is not a common disease and it affects ferrets who are less than
a year old. I have read that the ferret will be fine one day and very
sick the next day. Some of the signs include decreased appetite,
lethargy, weakness in legs, and pain.
From my understanding, there is no known cause or cure. Also, From
what I've read there no survivors of confirmed DIM cases.
I have heard of at least one incident where someone thought their
ferret was bitten by a spider but it turned out to be DIM.
I also do know that if it turns out to be DIM you should have your
vet report it to the American Ferret Association.
You can find out more about DIM at
